Voglio prendere dimestichezza con il fair isle ma non me la sento di intraprendere un lavoro impegnativo. Ho scelto il basco proposto nel libro di Alice Starmore "Book of Fair Isle Knitting". Il punto è che non mi piacciono i colori del modello e vorrei pure eliminare qualcuna delle mie rimanenze.

Primo tentativo:

I want to practice with fair isle but I'm scared of starting a major project. I've chosen the tam whose directions are given in Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting. The point is that I don't like the suggested color combo and I wish to get rid of some of my stash.

First try:

Chiaramente non funziona. Quello che mi era sempre sembrato un grigio chiaro non è poi così chiaro in questo caso. Ho studiato un pò e sono arrivata ad alcune conclusioni.

It clearly doesn't work. What I have always considered a light grey doesn't look so light in this case. I've studied a bit and here are my conclusions.

1° regola aurea: la caratteristica di chiaro/scuro di un colore non è un valore assoluto. Deve essere valutata in abbinamento con i colori adiacenti.

1° golden rule: lightness or darkness of colors is not an absolute value. It needs to be evaluated when matched with adjacent colors.

Ciò comporta che è necessario preparare sin dall'inizio una tavolozza di colori.

This means that it is highly recommended to prepare a color palette in advance.

2° regola aurea: i disegni sono stilizzati su uno sfondo. Il disegno e lo sfondo sono in progressiva intensità della stessa tinta. Occorre scegliere due colori in modo da avere il disegno in tonalità via via più intense e lo sfondo progressivamente più brillante. Poi si deve accoppiare un colore di contrasto per accentare il disegno qui e là.

2° golden rule: patterns are sketched on a background. Pattern and background are in progressive value of the same color. Choose two main colors and shade them in order to have intensifying colors on pattern and brightening colors on background. Then match a contrast color to accent the pattern here and there.

Io ho scelto il verde per il disegno e il giallo (con un pò di grigio e beige) per lo sfondo. Bordò come colore d'accento.

I've chosen green for pattern and yellow (with some grey and oatmeal) for background from my stash. Contrast color is burgundy.

3° regola aurea: il colore più brillante dello sfondo va abbinato al più intenso del disegno e al colore di contrasto, mentre le tinte meno brillanti del disegno sfumeranno nelle tinte più spente dello sfondo.

3° golden rule: brightest shade of background will match with most richest color of pattern and with contrast color, while lightest shade of background will match with lightest of pattern.

Ho fatto in modo da accoppiare il verde scuro con il giallo oro e il bordò di contrasto. I verdini sfumeranno sul grigio, il beige e il giallo chiaro.

I've managed to couple dark green with gold yellow and burgundy as contrast color. Lightest shades of green will fade on a oatmeal/grey/light yellow background.

E' consigliabile schizzare una bozza del disegno con le nuove tonalità. Questo renderà più chiaro l'effetto finale.

Possibly sketch the pattern in new shades. This can make the final result more evident.

Potrei anche fare a meno del grigio, sostituendolo con il giallo chiaro che preferisco.

I think I can even get rid of grey and substitute it with light yellow, that I prefer.

Ed ecco le coste alternate con il giallo chiaro sui dritti e il giallo oro e il bordò sui rovesci.

And here is the corrugated rib in light yellow on K sts and gold yellow and burgundy on P sts.
