Sbrilluccica! (It sparkles!)

Questo è proprio un filato d'altri tempi, non c'era neanche su Ravelry. Però stava in uno scaffale nel negozietto di lana dove vado di solito, ed era proprio ciò che cercavo.

Benchè sia tutto acrilico è molto morbida ed ha delle belle sfumature.

Though it's 100% acrylic it's so soft with nice shades.

Rollò vs macaron 1-0

Esperimenti in cucina nel weekend. Nonostante la mia avversione per i dolci troppo dolci mi sono avventurata nella preparazione dei macarons francesi, tentata da questa rivista.

Cooking experiments this weekend. Notwithstanding my avertion for oversweet cakes and pastries, I've been tempted to cook some french macarons by this magazine:

Sembravano così carini, e la ricetta era molto dettagliata con tante foto. Naturalmente la realizzazione è stata molto più complessa ed è stata ulteriormente complicata dai bimbi che giravano intorno in cucina.

They looked so cute and the recipe was clear and detailed with a lot of pictures.

Unfortunately the execution has not been so easy, given the additional difficulty determined by kids' strolling around in the kitchen.

Le attese della famiglia per una buona merenda sono andate deluse. Sono stata costretta a rimediare il pomeriggio seguente, questa volta con qualcosa di tipicamente siciliano: rollò con wurstel, con questa ricetta. "Professionali!" ha commentato il marito, e li ha mangiati tutti.

The family expectations for a good afternoon snack have been frustrated.

So I felt compelled to remedy with something completely different the day after. This recipe for typical, sicilian food: rollò con wurstel. Great result, this time. "Professional!" said my husband and ate all of them.

E della maglia, naturalmente: ho scaricato questo schema, Sugar Mountain shawl, appena l'ho visto. Scialle + pizzo + lana di medio spessore è irresistibile. Filato Grignasco Sport 90 beige.

Influenza per tutti (Everybody's got a cold)

Una settimana, dico una settimana, di influenza progressivamente contagiata a tutti i membri della famiglia. E ne siamo mica ancora fuori, no no! Io, naturalmente, sono stata l'ultima a capitolare.

Che si fa quanto il virus ti stermina la famiglia?

Il pancarrè! Come sta scritto sul simpatico allegato "Pane fatto in casa" alla rivista Cucina Moderna, numero di febbraio 2012. Io ho dimezzato le dosi, così più che un pancarrè mi è venuto un bel panino obeso. Altro che pancarrè! E' proprio un panino morbido morbido, al latte, di quelli un pò briosciosi che piacciono tanto al marito... Prossima volta dose piena. (PS. la ricetta non è altro che quella delle sorelle Simili, di cui peraltro condivido le indicazioni su temperatura e tempi di cottura).

One long week with a flu gradually extended to the whole family members. And we've not got rid of it yet! I've been the last to be infected, of course. What to do when the virus wipes out all your dearest? Homemade sandwich bread! As described in the supplement "Homemade bread" to the magazine "Cucina Moderna" (Modern cooking), feb 2012 issue. I halved quantities, so that instead of a sandwich loaf I've got a fat roll, like the milky ones my husband loves. Next time, full quantities.

Una battuta di pesca (Gone fishin')

Da quando è stato pubblicato lo schema su Knitty ho solo aspettato il momento ed il filato giusto per realizzarlo. E ne ho fatti due: due bimbi, due teste, due versioni. Ecco i miei Fish hats. E li adorano!

Since its issue on Knitty I've been waiting for the right moment and yarn to knit it. And it has come. I've made two: two kids, two heads, two colorways, here are my Fish Hats. And they love them!

I pacchi di Natale (Christmas boxes)

Quest'anno per Natale ho fatto dei pacchi. Nel senso che li ho proprio creati io grazie ad un'assidua visione di Art Attack, programma adorato dai miei pargoletti. In breve: ho conservato le scatole delle scarpe dei monelli e le ho rivestite di carta regalo in tema natalizio. All'interno i miei lavori a maglia. Sarà che la crisi stimola la creatività... ma io mi sono divertita un pacco! 

This year I've prepared Christmas packages by myself, as in Art Attack do. I picked up some shoeboxes and covered them with gift wrap. Inside, my knitted gifts. Maybe it is economic crysis that gives a boost to creativity, but I've had a lot (well, a box...) of fun!

Nuovo gomitolo e nuova sciarpa (New yarn ball and second gift scarf)

Qualche giorno fa passavo davanti ad un negozio di filati e sono rimasta colpita da un gomitolo - MANIFATTURA PRIMAVESI SOSIA -, per le sfumature di colore e la luminescenza di un filo metallico che avvolge il filo principale. Mi sono decisa a comprarne uno per fare una seconda Favorite Scarf Ever per regalo di Natale. Sto lavorando con ferri un pò più grossi che nella prima, perchè la lana è un pò pelosetta per via del mohair. Mentre il filato si sfila dal gomitolo appaiono nuove sfumature sorprendenti: un lavoro veramente piacevole!

Some days ago I strolled around a yarn shop and a yarn ball - MANIFATTURA PRIMAVESI SOSIA - struck me for its color changes and the sparkle of a metallic strand plied with yarn. I resolved to buy one with the aim to knit another Favorite Scarf Ever as Christmas gift. I'm knitting it with larger needles than the first, because of the fluffiness of the mohair blend. As the ball unravels colors show surprisingly, and new shades appear. A really pleasant project. Love!

Niente male... (Not so bad...)

Ho scovato questo schema gratis su Ravelry: un punto facile da fare con lana da calzini. Devo dire che mi era venuto qualche dubbio mentre sferruzzavo, perchè i bordi tendevano ad arrotolarsi un pò e i  buchetti mi sembravano un pò troppo femminili per un sciarpa che è destinata al mio papà! Invece, dopo averla stirata leggermente col ferro a vapore sul rovescio ho avuto una bella sorpresa: i buchetti si sono nascosti dietro alla colonna di diritti ed il punto a zig-zag è risultato veramente gradevole con questo filato. Fiuuuu! meno uno nella mia lista dei regali di Natale!

I found this free pattern through Ravelry: an easy stitch pattern with sockyarn. I was a bit doubtful of the final result while knitting, because hems were rolling a bit, and holes looked slighlty feminine in the scarf: this a gift for my father, and it seemed I was going in the wrong direction. But after steaming from the wrong side I've been so pleased! Holes become invisible behind the column of knit stitches and zig-zag pattern is lovely, particularly with this yarn. Pheew! Minus one in my Christmas gifts schedule!

Al lavoro per regali (knitting for Christmas)

Mi piace l'idea di fare regali di Natale realizzati da me. E devo dire che per lo più sono apprezzati... mi sono messa all'opera. Sciarpa con schema free, semplicissima, ma d'effetto. La lana è da calzini ed è tirata fuori da un pacchetto assortito acquistato da Wolle Hartmuth ad un prezzo concorrenziale. Ferri 3,5 mm.

Eccolo, il mio primo schema a pagamento! Mi piace un sacco, e ne sto facendo un  mucchio per quasi tutti quelli che conosco. Ce n'è uno per me, ovviamente, anche se il mio preferito è il primo che però è un regalo.

Here it is, my first pattern for sale! I really, really love it, and I'm knitting tons of this for almost everyone I know. There is one for me too, even if I prefer the original red one which, unfortunately, is not for me.

Il calderone (The kettle)

Tingere la lana è un'attività che periodicamente mi torna in mente. Questa volta ho provato la tintura in calderone con coloranti per alimenti, giusto per stare sicura coi bimbi intorno (sì amore, sto cuocendo la lana, no, non è per cena...). Il gomitolo originale era rosa confetto e non so proprio come mi sia entrato in casa. Ho scelto rosso vivo, rosso fragola e marrone. La prossima volta proverò delle soluzioni meno diluite, voglio delle transizioni più nette. Il risultato finale è bellissimo, sembra un bicchiere di vino rosso! In tutto 140 m. di lana grossa, da lavorare coi 4,5 o 5 mm. Buona per un bel collo caldo...

Wool dyeing is something that regularly comes back to my mind, and this time I've managed to try some kettle dyeing with food colors, just to feel safe with kids around (yes, darling, I'm cooking wool, no, it's not for dinner...). The original skein was candy pink, and I frankly can't remember how it arrived in my stash. I've chosen vivid red, strawberry red and brown. Next time I will try less diluted solutions, I'm looking for more neat color transitions. The final result is delicious, it seems a glass of red wine! A total of 140m more or less, bulky weight to knit with size 4,5 or 5 mm needles. Good for a warm cowl...

Colazione con due brioche (Breakfast with two brioches)

Da qualche tempo sono stata presa da un raptus  per il punto "brioche" (detto anche costa inglese). E' piuttosto semplice ed ipnotico, anche se è un pò complicato correggere gli errori. Ho fatto due sciarpe con lana di medio peso presa dal mucchio, non più identificabile, e con una contenuta quantità: quella verde è fatta con due gomitolini da 50 gr ed è piuttosto larga, mentre quella rosa è più stretta ma è fatta con un gomitolo. Tutto con ferri 4 mm. Adesso tocca solo aspettare che venga il freddo.

I've recently had a brioche stitch addiction: it's simple and it drives you in an hypnotic state, an almost mindless knitting just to relax before falling asleep. Not completely mindless anyway: it's a bit difficult to correct errors. I've made two scarves with stash worsted yarn, don't ask the blend because I don't know, with very small yardage: the green one is out of two 50 gr. balls and it's rather wide, the pink one is a little narrower but is only one ball. All with 4mm needles. Now it's just waiting for cold weather.

Ancora mare (on the beach again)

Anche se siamo quasi a fine settembre il tempo è ancora bello e siamo stati a mare sia sabato che domenica. Abbiamo scelto la spiaggia di Isola delle Femmine, accanto a Sferracavallo, giusto per cambiare rispetto ai soliti scogli. C'è una sabbia dorata ed il mare è meraviglioso. Proprio così: 

Even if it's late september the weather is still warm and we went to the beach both Saturday and Sunday. We chose the beach of Isola delle Femmine, close to Sferracavallo, just to make a change from our abitual reef. There is a gold sand and the sea is wonderful. Just like this:

Ai bimbi è piaciuto un sacco e vorrebbero tornare. Stamattina però al risveglio abbiamo avuto tuoni e pioggia, anche se la temperatura è ancora alta. Vedremo il prossimo weekend. Nel frattempo sto provando un Brooks Sweater (della EZ, naturalmente) in una bella alpaca mista della Grignasco, la Nature, che avevo da parte da un pò, coi ferri 4 mm. Finora procede bene.

Kids loved it and asked to come back again.

Today we woke up with thunders and rain, but it's still warm. We'll see next weekend. In the meanwhile, I'm trying a Classic Brooks Sweater (EZ, of course), with a Grignasco Nature mixed alpaca I had in stash, 4mm needles. So far, so good.
